Historical Context
Philippe de Champaigne's Tribute Money from 1655, in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, depicts Christ's famous response to the Pharisees' question about paying taxes to Caesar: "Render unto Caesar." The subject carried political as well as theological meaning in a period when the relationship between church and state was a matter of intense debate.
