Madonna della Scodella
Antonio da Correggio·1528
Historical Context
Correggio's Madonna della Scodella (c. 1528) at the Galleria Nazionale di Parma depicts the Rest on the Flight into Egypt with an unusual still-life detail — the 'scodella' (bowl) in the foreground — that grounds the sacred journey in domestic necessity. The bowl of food or water that Mary holds for the Christ Child transforms the miraculous flight from Herod's massacre into a scene of everyday maternal care: a mother feeding her child during a difficult journey. Correggio's ability to find the human reality within the sacred narrative — and to invest that human reality with theological meaning — was one of his greatest achievements.
Technical Analysis
Correggio's luminous handling of the outdoor light filtering through foliage creates a naturalistic setting, with the warm flesh tones and flowing drapery demonstrating his mature mastery of atmospheric painting.
