Saint Martin Sharing his Cloak
Jaume Ferrer II·1450
Historical Context
Jaume Ferrer II's Saint Martin Sharing his Cloak, painted around 1450 and now in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, depicts the most famous episode from the life of Martin of Tours — the moment when the Roman soldier Martin cut his military cloak in half to share with a freezing beggar at the gates of Amiens, after which Christ appeared to him in a dream wearing the half-cloak. This act of charity was the defining moment of Martin's conversion and one of the most beloved subjects in medieval Christian art, associated with virtues of generosity and compassion that had direct social meaning for medieval audiences.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with gilded areas. Saint Martin on horseback divides his red military cloak with a sword while the beggar reaches up from below, the compositional contrast between the mounted figure and the crouching poor man creating an effective diagonal tension that animates the charitable act.
