Orchard with chickens
Piet Mondrian·1901
Historical Context
Orchard with Chickens (1901), at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, combines the landscape subject of a leafy orchard with the genre element of domestic fowl going about their characteristic pecking and foraging activity among the fruit trees. The orchard was a subject associated with the Dutch rural tradition, and the addition of chickens introduces an agricultural, domestic note that connects the landscape to the lived reality of the farm. Painted in 1901, the work belongs to the period when Mondrian was deeply engaged with naturalistic landscape and animal subjects before the influence of Symbolism and Post-Impressionism began to alter his approach to form and color.
Technical Analysis
The orchard's upright tree forms provide a vertical structure through which the chickens and ground are seen. Mondrian renders the interplay of orchard light with the movement of the birds across the ground, combining the static elements of the tree composition with the animated presence of the poultry below.
