Narrow farm building and trees along the water

This early Mondrian shows a narrow farm building and accompanying trees reflected in still canal water — a motif so characteristic of the Dutch landscape as to seem almost generic, yet Mondrian's systematic investigation of such subjects reveals his interest in the structural conditions underlying Dutch painting's long tradition. The tall, vertical format of the farmhouse against a flat ground and reflective water surface imposes a kind of geometry on the naturalist subject.
