Narrow farm building and trees along the water
Piet Mondrian·1900
Historical Context
This early Mondrian shows a narrow farm building and accompanying trees reflected in still canal water — a motif so characteristic of the Dutch landscape as to seem almost generic, yet Mondrian's systematic investigation of such subjects reveals his interest in the structural conditions underlying Dutch painting's long tradition. The tall, vertical format of the farmhouse against a flat ground and reflective water surface imposes a kind of geometry on the naturalist subject. The Kunstmuseum Den Haag's comprehensive collection of early Mondrian makes visible the cumulative significance of these apparently modest studies.
Technical Analysis
The narrow building creates a strong vertical accent in an otherwise horizontal composition, its reflection doubling the effect below. Brushwork is direct and moderately textured, consistent with Mondrian's Post-Impressionist phase. The palette is subdued and naturalistic: grey-greens, raw ochres, muted blues.
