Crucifixion
Jan Provoost·1500
Historical Context
Jan Provoost painted this Crucifixion around 1500 in Bruges, where he was one of the last major painters of the once-dominant school. Provoost combined the traditional precision of Bruges painting with newer influences from Antwerp and Italy. His Crucifixion scenes demonstrate the emotional intensity expected of late Bruges devotional painting. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the refined technique of the late Bruges school and dramatic compositional staging. The figures at the foot of the cross are rendered with Provoost's characteristic blend of precision and emotional expression.
