Holy Family of Francis I
Raphael·1518
Historical Context
The Holy Family of Francis I (c. 1518) at the Louvre was created as a diplomatic gift for Francis I of France, Raphael's most powerful foreign patron. The large-scale composition, with the Holy Family expanded to include Saint Elizabeth, the young Baptist, and two angels, demonstrates the scale and ambition appropriate to a royal gift. The work was adapted from an earlier Raphael composition and executed with workshop participation, but the quality of the principal figures reflects the master's own involvement. The painting's arrival in the French royal collection established Raphael's presence in France and contributed to the enormous influence of his style on French Renaissance painting.
Technical Analysis
The monumental scale and rich, saturated palette reflect the grandeur appropriate to a royal commission, with the smoothly modeled figures arranged in a complex but harmonious spatial design.
