Holy Family (Nativity)
Lorenzo Costa·1490
Historical Context
Dating to around 1490 and now in Lyon, this Nativity belongs to the tradition of intimate twilight nativities that gained popularity across northern Italy in the later Quattrocento. The Christ child at the scene's centre anchors an emotionally warm gathering of figures in the tender, domestic mode Costa favoured for such subjects. Trained in Ferrara under the influence of Ercole de' Roberti and Francesco Cossa before establishing himself in Bologna, Costa brought a lyrical restraint to religious narrative that distinguished him from more dramatic contemporaries. The Lyon museum's holding documents the dispersal of northern Italian panels through French collections.
Technical Analysis
Attention is drawn inward toward the Christ child through directed gazes and gestures of surrounding figures. Light modelling is soft and even, without dramatic chiaroscuro, relying on tonal harmony and considered spacing to convey devotional calm.
