The Fortune Teller by Caravaggio

The Fortune Teller

Caravaggio·1594

Historical Context

Caravaggio painted The Fortune Teller around 1594, one of his earliest genre paintings depicting a Romani woman reading a young man's palm while simultaneously stealing his ring. The painting was revolutionary in presenting contemporary street life at monumental scale, without any moralizing classical or religious framework. This and the similar Cardsharps established Caravaggio's reputation in Rome and attracted the attention of important collectors including Cardinal Del Monte.

Technical Analysis

The painting demonstrates Caravaggio's developing naturalistic technique with figures lit by even, natural light against a plain background. The subtle psychological interplay between the two figures, conveyed through glances and hand gestures, creates a narrative tension that draws the viewer in.
