The Baptism of Christ
Historical Context
Piero della Francesca's Baptism of Christ, painted around 1448 for the National Gallery, is among the most serene works of the Italian Renaissance. Created for a chapel in Piero's native Sansepolcro, the painting reflects his unique synthesis of theological contemplation and geometric precision Piero della Francesca brought mathematical precision and monumental stillness to his figures, creating some of the most geometrically pure compositions in all of Renaissance painting.
Technical Analysis
The composition is organized around a rigorous geometric framework, with the tree trunk, Christ's body, and the descending dove forming a central axis. Piero's luminous palette and cool, even light create an effect of eternal stillness.
