Saints Peter and Dorothy
Historical Context
The Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece painted Saints Peter and Dorothy in 1507 during his mature period in Cologne. This master's ornamental richness and meticulous craftsmanship made him one of the most distinctive painters of the Cologne school. The pairing of saints suggests a specific dedication or devotional context. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's jewel-like coloring and extraordinarily detailed rendering of vestments and attributes. The ornamental surface treatment creates a tapestry-like visual richness.
