David
Ugolino di Nerio·1326
Historical Context
Ugolino di Nerio's David (c. 1326) is a prophetic figure panel from the artist's monumental Santa Croce altarpiece in Florence, one of the most important Sienese commissions for a Florentine church. The altarpiece was dismembered in the sixteenth century, and its fragments are now scattered across museums worldwide. David's inclusion among the Old Testament prophets reflects the medieval typological tradition linking Hebrew scripture to the Christian narrative.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on gold ground, the half-length figure of David displays Ugolino's refined Sienese draftsmanship with fluid contours and subtle facial modeling. The panel retains traces of original punch-work decoration in the halo and background gilding.
