The Virgin: Left Pinnacle Panel by Giovanni da Milano

The Virgin: Left Pinnacle Panel

Giovanni da Milano·1365

Historical Context

This Virgin panel, the left pinnacle of a dismembered altarpiece by Giovanni da Milano dating to around 1365, is now in the National Gallery, London. As a pinnacle element, the half-length Virgin would have occupied the upper register of the altarpiece alongside a corresponding figure (likely Saint John the Evangelist), flanking the central Christ of the Apocalypse. Giovanni's work in Florence brought a distinctly Lombard refinement to the Tuscan tradition, admired by contemporaries for its delicacy.

Technical Analysis

Executed in egg tempera on a pointed gold-ground panel, the Virgin is rendered with Giovanni da Milano's signature soft facial modeling, luminous skin tones, and a gently mournful expression that reveals his Northern Italian artistic formation.
