Saints Nicholas, Damian and Margaret: Right Pilaster by Giovanni dal Ponte

Saints Nicholas, Damian and Margaret: Right Pilaster

Giovanni dal Ponte·1422

Historical Context

Giovanni dal Ponte was a Florentine painter of the early Quattrocento who bridged the late Trecento tradition and the new Quattrocento style, working in fresco and panel painting for Florentine churches. This pilaster panel depicting Saints Nicholas, Damian, and Margaret of 1422 would have been part of a large polyptych or altarpiece, the pilaster figures flanking the central composition. Dal Ponte was a craftsman-level practitioner — not in the front rank of Florentine innovation — but his works provide essential evidence of the everyday devotional image production that constituted the bulk of early Florentine Quattrocento painting.

Technical Analysis

Pilaster figures in altarpieces present a distinctive formal challenge: they must read as complete images at small scale while also serving as architectural accents within a larger decorative program. Dal Ponte's three saints are arranged vertically with individual attributes — Nicholas's three balls, the physician Damian's medical tools, Margaret's dragon — making each immediately identifiable despite compressed format.
