Portrait of a Knight of Rhodes
Franciabigio·1514
Historical Context
Franciabigio painted this Portrait of a Knight of Rhodes around 1514 for the National Gallery. The Order of Saint John, based on Rhodes until 1522, was one of the most prestigious military-religious orders in Christendom, and portraits of its knights reflected both martial and spiritual dignity. The 1510s were a decade of extraordinary artistic achievement across Europe, shaped by the mature works of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian masters.
Technical Analysis
The portrait presents the knight in his order's distinctive black mantle with the white cross, rendered in Franciabigio's competent Florentine manner with clear drawing and the warm palette of the High Renaissance period.
