The Virgin and Child with Angels
Benozzo Gozzoli·1450
Historical Context
Benozzo Gozzoli's Virgin and Child with Angels, painted around 1450, reflects the artist's formation in the workshop of Fra Angelico combined with his own decorative exuberance. Gozzoli would become famous for the Medici Chapel frescoes, but his panel paintings demonstrate the same delight in color and ornamental detail. Benozzo Gozzoli was the most prolific fresco painter of mid-fifteenth-century Tuscany, trained under Fra Angelico and Ghiberti before establishing himself as the creator of magnificent decorative cycles for churches, civic buildings, and private chapels.
Technical Analysis
The Madonna and angels are rendered with Gozzoli's characteristic bright colors and decorative richness, the composition reflecting Fra Angelico's influence while displaying Gozzoli's own more opulent, festive approach to sacred imagery.
