Historical Context
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini was among the most prolific Florentine painters of the late Trecento, working in a conservative Giottesque tradition even as the International Gothic style gained ground. This frame roundel of 1387 would have adorned the border of a larger altarpiece, serving as a decorative yet devotionally charged element within an elaborate carved framework. Such roundels typically depicted prophets, saints, or angels and were integral to the polyptych ensembles that dominated Florentine church commissions.
