Frame Roundel

Niccolò di Pietro Gerini was among the most prolific Florentine painters of the late Trecento, working in a conservative Giottesque tradition even as the International Gothic style gained ground. This frame roundel of 1387 would have adorned the border of a larger altarpiece, serving as a decorative yet devotionally charged element within an elaborate carved framework. Such roundels typically depicted prophets, saints, or angels and were integral to the polyptych ensembles that dominated Florentine church commissions.

Executed in egg tempera on a shaped wooden panel with gilded ground, the roundel demonstrates Gerini's precise linear draftsmanship and firm modeling derived from the Orcagna workshop tradition.
