The Annunciation
Historical Context
Duccio di Buoninsegna's Annunciation, dating to around 1300, depicts the moment when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God. As the founder of the Sienese school, Duccio transformed the Byzantine icon tradition by infusing it with Gothic naturalism and emotional warmth, creating a new visual language for Italian painting. The Annunciation held special significance in Siena, a city that placed itself under the Virgin's direct protection.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel with the two figures arranged across a gold ground, connected by Gabriel's gesture and the Virgin's responsive posture. Duccio's refined linear style creates elegant contours in the drapery, while his subtle tonal modeling of the faces represents a significant advance over the flatter Byzantine prototypes.
