Giovanni Cristoforo Longoni
Andrea Solari·1505
Historical Context
Andrea Solari painted this portrait of Giovanni Cristoforo Longoni around 1505 in Milan. Solari was one of Leonardo's most accomplished Milanese followers, and his portraits reflect the master's influence in their sfumato modeling and psychological subtlety. Longoni was presumably a Milanese notable whose portrait documents the appearance of the city's elite. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Leonardesque sfumato and refined surface finish. Solari's portrait technique captures the sitter's individuality with the subtle tonal transitions that distinguish Leonardo's school.
