Portrait of Samuel van Houten (1837–1930) by Hendrik Willem Mesdag

Portrait of Samuel van Houten (1837–1930)

Hendrik Willem Mesdag·1887

Historical Context

Hendrik Willem Mesdag was best known for his monumental panorama of Scheveningen, but this 1887 portrait of Samuel van Houten — liberal Dutch politician and famous author of the 1874 child labor law — demonstrates his considerable ability as a portraitist. Van Houten was one of the most important social reformers of 19th-century Netherlands, and a portrait by Mesdag would have carried both social and cultural prestige. The work, now in the Groninger Museum, documents the overlap between Mesdag's Hague School connections and the broader Dutch cultural and political elite of the period.

Technical Analysis

Mesdag portrays Van Houten in a three-quarter view typical of formal portraiture of the period. The painting is executed with a confident, direct handling — broad strokes in the background setting off a more carefully modeled face. The palette is restrained, with the dark formal dress contrasting with the pale, carefully observed face.
