Still life with pineapple and other fruits

Christoffel Bisschop was a Dutch painter with historical and decorative orientations who maintained productive connections to Fries cultural patronage throughout his career. His 1904 still life with pineapple and other fruits is an elaborate display piece in the long tradition of Dutch fruit still life, a genre that flourished from the seventeenth century through the nineteenth in the Netherlands. The inclusion of a pineapple — a prestigious exotic fruit that still carried associations of wealth and luxury in 1904 — signals both Bisschop's historical orientation and the prosperity of his patrons. The work is in the Fries Museum.

The pineapple commands the composition as a central vertical accent surrounded by rounder, softer fruit forms. Bisschop renders each fruit with careful observation of surface texture and sheen — the rough pineapple skin contrasting with smooth plums and glossy grapes.
