Saint Catherine
Historical Context
The Master of the Embroidered Foliage painted this Saint Catherine around 1500 in Brussels. Catherine of Alexandria, patron of scholars and philosophers, was among the most widely venerated female saints. The Master's distinctive treatment of vegetation creates a uniquely decorative setting for the sacred figure. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the Master's signature embroidery-like foliage and luminous atmosphere. The saint's scholarly attributes are rendered with the same precision applied to the distinctive landscape background.
