Saint Barbara by Master of the Embroidered Foliage

Saint Barbara

Master of the Embroidered Foliage·1500

Historical Context

The Master of the Embroidered Foliage painted this Saint Barbara around 1500 in Brussels. This anonymous master's distinctive treatment of vegetation, resembling embroidered fabric, gives him his name. Saint Barbara, with her tower attribute, was one of the most widely venerated female saints in the Low Countries. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with the Master's signature densely detailed foliage and luminous atmosphere. The saint's figure is set against the characteristic embroidery-like landscape that defines this painter's unique style.
