Ansidei Madonna
Raphael·1505
Historical Context
The Ansidei Madonna (c. 1505) at the National Gallery, London, was painted for the Ansidei family chapel in the Church of San Fiorenzo in Perugia. The formal sacra conversazione — the enthroned Virgin and Child flanked by Saints John the Baptist and Nicholas of Bari — is treated with an imposing architectural setting that reflects Raphael's study of Florentine altarpiece composition while maintaining the Umbrian clarity and sweetness of his training. The work is one of the largest and most ambitious of Raphael's pre-Roman altarpieces, demonstrating his ability to organize a multi-figure composition in deep architectural space while maintaining the devotional focus on the central figures.
Technical Analysis
The perfectly rendered perspective of the architectural setting and the harmonious color relationships between the Virgin's blue mantle, the saints' robes, and the warm background demonstrate Raphael's extraordinary compositional clarity.
