The Disrobing of Christ
El Greco·1578
Historical Context
The Disrobing of Christ (El Espolio, 1577-79), in Toledo Cathedral, is one of El Greco's greatest paintings and the work that established his reputation in Spain. The composition's radical innovation — Christ's brilliant red robe surrounded by a press of hostile faces — creates an image of sublime spiritual isolation amid worldly violence. The painting caused a dispute with the cathedral chapter over both payment and propriety, as some figures were depicted above Christ's head, violating decorum.
Technical Analysis
The brilliant scarlet of Christ's robe dominates the compressed composition of pressing figures, with the upward gaze of Christ creating a vertical axis of spiritual transcendence amid the horizontal press of the hostile crowd.
