The Vision of Saint Bernard
Joos van Cleve·1507
Historical Context
Joos van Cleve painted this Vision of Saint Bernard in 1507 during his early career in Antwerp. The subject shows the Virgin appearing to Bernard of Clairvaux, a scene associated with the Cistercian order. Van Cleve was emerging as one of Antwerp's most accomplished painters, known for combining Netherlandish precision with Italianate warmth. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with rich coloring and careful rendering of the mystical encounter. Van Cleve's smooth technique and warm palette show his developing synthesis of Netherlandish and Italian influences.
