Madonna and Child with Saints and a Donor

The Master of Frankfurt painted this Madonna and Child with Saints and a Donor in 1505. The integration of a donor portrait with sacred figures in a single composition was a standard format in Netherlandish altarpiece painting. The Master of Frankfurt's prolific Antwerp workshop produced numerous such commissions for ecclesiastical and private patrons. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
