Sun and Shade
Joaquim Mir·1894
Historical Context
Sun and Shade of 1894 is an early work by Mir, painted when he was just twenty years old and studying at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts under the influence of Modest Urgell and Joan Llimona. This early date places the painting in a period before Mir had developed the radical chromatic style of his mature work, and it likely shows a more conventional naturalist approach to the contrast of sunlight and shadow in a landscape setting. Nevertheless, the choice of subject — the dynamic interplay of light and shade in the natural world — anticipates the preoccupation that would define his greatest work. The title suggests a composition organized around the dappled light effects that the Impressionists had made central to landscape painting. By 1894 Mir was already drawn to outdoor subjects and the direct observation of Mediterranean light. The MNAC collection traces his development from these early works through to his fully mature style.
Technical Analysis
This early work likely employs a more conventionally tonal approach than Mir's later paintings, using chiaroscuro modeling to differentiate sunlit and shaded areas. The brushwork is more restrained than his post-1900 style, but interest in the quality of outdoor light is already evident.

- ◆Look for the early signs of Mir's interest in broken color and direct paint application
- ◆The handling of shadows anticipates his later use of blue-violet rather than merely darkened local color
- ◆This early work shows the academic naturalist foundation on which Mir's later radicalism was built
