Infanta Margaret Theresa in a White and Silver Dress by Diego Velázquez

Infanta Margaret Theresa in a White and Silver Dress

Diego Velázquez·1656

Historical Context

This portrait of Infanta Margaret Theresa in a white and silver dress was painted in 1656, the same year as Las Meninas, in which the young princess also appears. Margaret Theresa was betrothed from birth to her maternal uncle Emperor Leopold I, and Velázquez produced a series of portraits documenting her growth that were sent to Vienna as diplomatic assurances of the match. These portraits trace the princess from early childhood to adolescence with unprecedented psychological sensitivity.

Technical Analysis

Velázquez renders the elaborate silver-embroidered dress with breathtaking economy of means, suggesting metallic sheen and textile weight through loose, confident brushstrokes. The luminous silver-white tonality against the dark background creates an almost ethereal effect.
