Christ of Mercy between the Prophets David and Jeremiah
Diego de la Cruz·1495
Historical Context
Diego de la Cruz was a leading painter in Burgos in the late fifteenth century, working in a Hispano-Flemish style that blended Netherlandish technique with Castilian religious fervor. This panel of Christ of Mercy flanked by David and Jeremiah dates to around 1495 and connects Christ's Passion to Old Testament prophecy. Diego's workshop supplied numerous altarpieces to churches in the Burgos region.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel in the Hispano-Flemish manner, combining detailed Netherlandish surface treatment with the gold-ground conventions of Spanish retablos. The prophets' scrolls and Christ's wounds are rendered with devotional precision.
