The Bride at her Toilet on the Day of her Wedding by David Wilkie

The Bride at her Toilet on the Day of her Wedding

David Wilkie·1838

Historical Context

The Bride at her Toilet on the Day of her Wedding at the National Galleries Scotland, painted in 1838, depicts a Scottish bride preparing for her wedding. Wilkie's late oriental-influenced style brought new warmth and richness to his Scottish subjects. Wilkie's technical development moved from the tightly finished early style of his celebrated genre works to a looser, more painterly approach following his Spanish journey of 1827–28, where he was profoundly influenced by Velázquez and Murillo.

Technical Analysis

The intimate dressing scene combines detailed costume observation with warm, atmospheric lighting influenced by Wilkie's Middle Eastern travels.
