Portrait of the Artist's Brother, Captain James Wilkie (1784 - 1824) by David Wilkie

Portrait of the Artist's Brother, Captain James Wilkie (1784 - 1824)

David Wilkie·c. 1813

Historical Context

Captain James Wilkie, the artist's younger brother who served in the British military, appears in this affectionate sibling portrait from around 1813. James would die in 1824 at the age of forty, making this likeness a poignant personal document. David Wilkie painted relatively few portraits of family members, lending this work a private intimacy absent from his public commissions. The National Galleries Scotland preserves this painting, which reveals the gentler, more personal side of Britain's most famous genre painter.

Technical Analysis

The half-length format places emphasis on Captain Wilkie's face and military bearing. David Wilkie's brushwork is notably tender here compared to his genre paintings, with soft transitions in the flesh tones and careful attention to his brother's expression. The dark background and uniform create a restrained composition that foregrounds character over setting.
