Mystic Marriage of St Catherine
Domenico Beccafumi·1509
Historical Context
Domenico Beccafumi painted this Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine around 1509, during his early career in Siena. Beccafumi was the last great painter of the Sienese school, developing a proto-Mannerist style of extraordinary luminosity and emotional intensity. This early work already hints at the visionary quality that would define his mature art. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Beccafumi's characteristic luminous coloring and inventive spatial effects. The ethereal light and fluid figure modeling anticipate the Mannerist tendencies of his later masterworks.
