Education of the Virgin Mary
Guido Reni·1640
Historical Context
The Education of the Virgin Mary, depicting Anne teaching the young Mary to read, was a subject that combined domestic tenderness with theological significance — the preparation of the vessel chosen by God for the Incarnation. Reni painted several versions of this subject over his career, and this late version of c.1640 reflects his mature silver style. The subject was popular in post-Tridentine devotional painting as it emphasised Mary's exemplary virtuous childhood.
Technical Analysis
Anne and the young Mary are arranged in a close, affectionate grouping, the open book a focal point of the composition. Reni's late silver palette is fully in evidence: cool, pearlescent flesh tones against pale blue and grey draperies. The loose, almost summary brushwork of the drapery contrasts with the careful handling of the faces.
