The Lamentation
Hugo van der Goes·1450
Historical Context
Hugo van der Goes, who created the famous Portinari Altarpiece for the Medici agent in Bruges, which profoundly influenced Florentine painters when it arrived in Florence around 1483, created this work around 1450, now in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. This work reflects the artistic culture of Ghent during the Early Renaissance, when painters were forging new approaches to representation through the study of perspective, anatomy, and natural light.
Technical Analysis
The composition centers on the limp body of Christ, with mourning figures arranged to create a rhythmic pattern of grief that draws the viewer into empathetic contemplation of the sacred scene.
