Mary with Child, St. Francis, St. Catherine and young St. John the Baptist
Francesco Francia·1504
Historical Context
Francesco Francia painted this Mary with Child, Saint Francis, Saint Catherine, and young Saint John in 1504, combining four of the most widely venerated saints in a harmonious devotional composition. The young Baptist's inclusion reflects Bolognese familiarity with the Florentine tradition of depicting him with the Christ Child. Francia's sacra conversazione compositions brought a quality of luminous harmony and gentle warmth to altarpiece painting that was uniquely Bolognese — influenced by Venetian colorism and Perugino's Umbrian clarity but distinct from both. In 1504 Francia was at the height of his reputation, receiving commissions from across the Emilian region and beyond. His close friendship with Perugino connected the two masters' artistic worlds and influenced the development of both.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Francia's signature smooth modeling and warm golden tonality. The balanced arrangement of figures and serene expressions create the meditative calm that defined Bolognese High Renaissance devotional art.
