Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
Geertgen tot Sint Jans created this Lamentation around 1487 in Haarlem, where he lived with the Knights of Saint John. One of the most original Early Netherlandish painters, Geertgen died young around age 28, leaving only a small body of work. His paintings are notable for their emotional depth and innovative use of light, influencing later Haarlem painters significantly. This work belongs to the Early Renaissance, the transformative period in European art when painters first applied mathematical perspective, naturalistic figure modeling, and archaeological interest in antiquity to the inherited traditions of medieval devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Geertgen's characteristic soft, rounded figure style and poignant emotional expression. The subtle play of light across the mourning figures creates an intimate devotional atmosphere.
