Lamentation of Christ
Historical Context
The Master of the Aachen Altar painted this Lamentation of Christ around 1500 in Cologne. This anonymous painter was one of the leading figures of the Cologne school, producing elaborate narrative compositions with rich coloring. The Lamentation, showing the mourning over Christ's body, demanded complex figure arrangement and emotional expression. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
