An der dalmatinischen Küste bei Ragusa
Emil Jakob Schindler·1888
Historical Context
Emil Jakob Schindler's 1888 view of the Dalmatian coast near Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik) captures the specific Mediterranean landscape of the Adriatic coast during one of his working trips outside Austria. The limestone cliffs, transparent sea, and intense Adriatic light provided Schindler with quite different subject matter from his usual Vienna Woods subjects, and he responded with characteristic atmospheric sensitivity to the different quality of southern light. The Belvedere holds this alongside his Austrian subjects as evidence of his engagement with the broader European landscape tradition.
Technical Analysis
The Dalmatian coastal landscape is rendered with Schindler's atmospheric naturalism applied to quite different conditions than his usual Austrian subjects — the intense Adriatic light, the pale limestone, the transparent blue sea requiring adjustment of his characteristic palette. His handling captures both the specific character of the coast and the quality of Mediterranean light.
