Victory of Saint James of Compostela over the Saracens at the Battle of Clavigo
Historical Context
Franz Anton Maulbertsch was the greatest Austrian Baroque and Rococo painter, and his Victory of Saint James at the Battle of Clavijo from 1762 exemplifies his theatrical, intensely animated approach to religious and historical subjects. The Battle of Clavijo is a legendary medieval encounter (possibly mythical) in which the apostle Saint James miraculously appeared on horseback to aid Christian forces against the Moors in Spain, an episode that underpinned the cult of Santiago de Compostela. Maulbertsch painted numerous ceiling frescoes and altarpieces across the Habsburg lands, bringing an ecstatic energy unmatched in Central European Rococo painting.
Technical Analysis
Maulbertsch's characteristic handling — bold, slashing brushwork, acid yellows and oranges, extreme figure foreshortening — creates a sense of supernatural energy perfectly suited to the miraculous subject. The saint on horseback sweeps across the composition like a divine whirlwind amid tumbling figures.
