Böhmerwald (aus der Mappe „16 Ansichten tschechischer Landschaften 'Česka Krajiná'“)
Historical Context
The Böhmerwald — the Bohemian Forest — is one of the largest remaining areas of temperate forest in Central Europe, forming a natural border between Bohemia and Bavaria. Engelmüller's 1902 view emphasises the deep, elemental quality of the forest that had made it a subject of Romantic landscape painting from the early nineteenth century. German and Czech painters alike had found in the Böhmerwald a northern equivalent to the southern forests celebrated by the Danube School painters; Engelmüller's contribution locates the forest firmly within Czech cultural geography. The painting is at the Belvedere in Vienna.
Technical Analysis
Dense forest forms create a composition dominated by organic, irregular shapes — the opposite of the open valley views elsewhere in the portfolio. Engelmüller renders the forest's depth through atmospheric tonal recession. The palette is deep green and cool, appropriate to an old forest landscape.
