Timon of Athens
Historical Context
Dance-Holland painted this scene from Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens" in 1767, demonstrating his ambition in history painting. The subject of Timon ruined by false friends carried moral weight. Dance painted the work for David Garrick, the great actor-manager. Dance's portraits combined the formal conventions of Grand Manner portraiture with a cooler, more austere palette and sculptural figure treatment that reflected his years studying in Rome under the influence of Pompeo Batoni.
Technical Analysis
Dance composes the scene with classical restraint, arranging toga-clad figures in a theatrical tableau. The dark palette shows the influence of his Roman training.
