Mary with Child and Four Saints
Perugino·1493
Historical Context
Perugino painted this sacra conversazione of the Virgin and Child with saints around 1493, a composition type he refined throughout his career. His symmetrical arrangements of serene figures within luminous Umbrian landscapes became the template for High Renaissance devotional painting. As Raphael's teacher, Perugino's influence on the next generation was immeasurable. Pietro Perugino was the most successful painter in Central Italy around 1490-1505, running workshops in both Perugia and Florence while executing major commissions in Rome, including the Sistine Chapel frescoes.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with Perugino's signature spatial clarity and gentle color harmonies. The saints are arranged in balanced symmetry around the central Virgin, with a characteristic atmospheric landscape receding behind.
