Saint Jerome in Penitence by Perugino

Saint Jerome in Penitence

Perugino·1482

Historical Context

Pietro Perugino painted this Saint Jerome in Penitence around 1482, during the period when he was establishing himself as one of Italy's leading painters. Perugino's serene, idealized figures and luminous Umbrian landscapes made him the dominant painter in central Italy before Raphael's rise. The penitent Jerome was a popular subject reflecting humanist interest in scholarly devotion and ascetic virtue. Pietro Perugino was the most successful painter in Central Italy around 1490-1505, running workshops in both Perugia and Florence while executing major commissions in Rome, including the Sistine Chapel frescoes.

Technical Analysis

Oil on panel with Perugino's characteristic soft modeling and spacious landscape background. The saint's figure shows the elegant proportions and gentle expression that define Perugino's mature style.
