The penitent Jerome was a popular subject reflecting humanist interest in scholarly devotion and ascetic virtue. Pietro Perugino was the most successful painter in Central Italy around 1490-1505, running workshops in both Perugia and Florence while executing major commissions in Rome, including the Sistine Chapel frescoes.
