A Merchant of the German Steelyard: 'Hans of Antwerp' by Hans Holbein the Younger

A Merchant of the German Steelyard: 'Hans of Antwerp'

Hans Holbein the Younger·1532

Historical Context

A Merchant of the German Steelyard in the Royal Collection, painted in 1532, depicts one of the Hanseatic merchants who traded from their London enclave. Holbein painted several Steelyard merchants, documenting the international trading community in Tudor London. Holbein's merchant portraits at the Steelyard are remarkable documents of the international trading world of early modern London, capturing the self-confidence of men who bridged Germanic and English commercial cultures.

Technical Analysis

The merchant is surrounded by objects that identify his trade and prosperity. Holbein's meticulous still-life rendering of the commercial objects creates a visual inventory of mercantile life.
