Betrayal of Christ (with St Matthew on the verso)
Historical Context
The Master of Hoogstraeten painted this Betrayal of Christ with Saint Matthew on the verso around 1506. The double-sided panel suggests it functioned as part of a folding altarpiece, with different images visible when open and closed. The Betrayal scene shows Judas's kiss and the arrest of Christ in Gethsemane. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with narrative staging on both sides, requiring effective compositions for both the recto and verso. The Antwerp school technique and vivid coloring serve both the dramatic Passion scene and the devotional saint.
