William Carr Beresford, Viscount Beresford by William Beechey

William Carr Beresford, Viscount Beresford

William Beechey·1814

Historical Context

William Beechey's 1814 portrait of William Carr Beresford, Viscount Beresford, celebrated one of the British army's most effective commanders in the Peninsular War. Beresford had transformed the Portuguese army into a force capable of engaging Napoleon's veterans, playing a decisive role at the Battle of Albuera in 1811. Beechey depicted him in military uniform with campaign medals, projecting the authority of a professional soldier who earned his rank through competence rather than birth. The portrait commemorates Beresford's wartime service while capturing the military culture of Wellington's army in Iberia.

Technical Analysis

Beechey's straightforward military portrait renders the uniform and decorations with professional precision. The solid composition and warm flesh tones create a dignified image of military authority.
