Richard Redgrave by Richard Redgrave

Richard Redgrave

Richard Redgrave·c. 1846

Historical Context

A portrait of Redgrave, possibly a self-portrait or by a contemporary, from around 1846 at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The National Portrait Gallery"s mission to document notable British figures through portraiture made Redgrave, as both a respected painter and an important arts administrator, a natural subject for the collection. By 1846, Redgrave had established his reputation with a series of acclaimed social-realist paintings. Richard Redgrave was one of the most socially engaged painters of the Victorian era, using the Royal Academy's exhibitions to draw attention to the plight of governess workers, seamstresses, and other women forced into poorly paid employment by economic necessity.

Technical Analysis

The portrait follows mid-Victorian conventions, with the sitter shown in formal attire against a neutral background. The face receives careful, detailed treatment that aims for both physical likeness and the suggestion of intellectual character. The palette is dark and restrained, with warm flesh tones providing the only color relief. The brushwork is precise and professional, consistent with the standards of Royal Academy portraiture.
