De ingang van het Canal Grande met de Santa Maria della Salu by Francesco Guardi

De ingang van het Canal Grande met de Santa Maria della Salu

Francesco Guardi·1765

Historical Context

Guardi's view of the entrance to the Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute captures Venice's most iconic approach by water — the view that greeted travellers arriving by sea. The Salute's vast baroque dome and sweeping steps made it the architectural centrepiece of every visitor's first impression of Venice. While the attribution notes suggest a religious genre classification, this is primarily a veduta showing the church in its canal setting, consistent with Guardi's landscape output.

Technical Analysis

The Salute dominates the composition, its stone surfaces dissolved into Guardi's characteristic loose, shimmering brushwork. The water surface and the gondola traffic are handled with rapid, gestural marks that create movement and light simultaneously. His atmospheric dissolution of architectural detail distinguishes his views of this subject sharply from Canaletto's more precise renderings.
