De Annunciatie
Giovanni Mazone·1524
Historical Context
Giovanni Mazone was a Ligurian painter active in Genoa and Savona whose work blended Flemish influence with local Ligurian practice. This Annunciation — De Annunciatie — dated 1524 and held in the Instituut Collectie Nederland, treats the foundational moment of Christian salvation history: the angel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin that she would bear the Son of God. The Annunciation was the most theologically precise of devotional subjects, with iconographic conventions carefully established over centuries. Gabriel's lily, the interrupted prayer, the diagonal of divine communication — all carried precise meaning for viewers trained in this visual tradition.
Technical Analysis
The Annunciation composition separates Gabriel and Mary across the picture plane, often with a lily or architectural element marking the threshold between the divine messenger and the contemplative Virgin. Mazone's Ligurian style favours clear, warm colour and careful figure modelling.
